A total of around 4.1bn rupees ($43m) has been allocated across 12 pilot hydrogen mobility projects in India under the country’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.

This financial assistance will cover up to 90% of the cost of 70 hydrogen-powered vehicles, including 27 buses, 43 trucks, and 12 hydrogen refuelling stations (HRSs).

The funds will cover both fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (H2-ICE) vehicles.

So far, only 415.8m rupees has been “released” by the awarding body, India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

The projects set to receive funding are split into two phases.

The first phase includes a project from Indian state-owned power company NTPC to build six fuel-cell buses with around 391m rupees from the MNRE.

This phase also includes a project by state-owned oil company IOCL and Indian steel giant Tata steel to deploy two buses and 14 trucks with funding of around 700m rupees, and a project from Volvo and petroleum company HPCL to operate a single H2-ICE truck with funding of about 171m rupees.

The first phase will also fund a project led by India’s Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) and India’s BPCL with 348.4m rupees to operate two fuel-cell trucks and two H2-ICE trucks.

Resilience Industries and Ashok Leyland have also been funded with 468.7m rupees to operate one H2-ICE bus and one fuel-cell bus, as well as six H2-ICE trucks and two fuel-cell trucks.

Phase two includes a total of seven projects featuring some of the same organisations, including one in which NTPC and Gujarat Energy will deploy three FCEV buses using 266m rupees in funding, as well as another in which ANERT, transport firm KSRTC, and Tata Motors will deploy two FCEV buses and two H2-ICE trucks using about 515m rupees in funding.

In other projects Indian power company NHPC will deploy one FCEV bus using about 17.7m rupees in funding, while KPI Green Energy Limited, TML, and AB Process Technologies will be funded with around 434m rupees to deploy six H2-ICE trucks.

Another project will see VE Commercial Vehicles and BPCL deploy one FCEV bus and five H2-ICE trucks using 59.1m rupees in funding.

A further project led by Waaree Energies and Indify Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies will receive about 287.7m rupees to deploy two FCEV buses and one FCEV truck.

A final project led by BPCL, EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, and Super Spares & Services will deploy eight FCEV buses and two FCEV trucks using about 448m rupees.

It is not clear from the MNRE announcement which projects will also build hydrogen refuelling stations alongside deployment of vehicles.

The MNRE also noted that those executing these projects will be required to “regularly submit performance reports on hydrogen vehicle operations, including vehicle efficiency, fuel consumption, safety aspects, and utilization patterns”, with the learnings from the pilot projects going on to inform future policies and initiatives.

Last month India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the country’s first hydrogen-powered train which will run on the Jind-Sonipat line in the northwestern state of Haryana.
